What is the mode?
Mode is the particular chosen number of the data set that is chosen depending on the higher frequency (number of repetitions) in the data set. There may be more than one value in the same data set due to the same frequency of the number.
Methods to find the mode of a data set
To determine the mode of the data set follow the below steps.
- Firstly, arrange the data set values in ascending order (from least to greatest).
- Note the frequency of the repeated number the higher repetition number is the mode of the given data set and if the frequency is zero then there is no mode.
- If the frequency/repetition number one or more values are the same then all are the mode of the given data set.
How to evaluate the mode of a data set?
Example 1
If the data set is given as {2, 3, 5, 7, 3, 6, 9} then find its mode.
Solution
Step 1: Arrange the data set in ascending order.
Data set = {2, 3, 3, 5, 6, 7, 9}
Step 2: Note the most repeated number in the data set and write its repetition value.
Where “3” is the most repeated number and it is repeated 2-times in a data set.
Hence “3
” is the mode of the data set.

Example 2:
If the data set is given as {2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 6, 9} then evaluate its mode.
Solution:
Step 1: Arrange the data set in ascending order.
Data set = {2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 9, 11}
Step 2: Note the most repeated number in the data set and write its repetition value.
Where the most repeated number is not present in a data set.
Hence the mode of the data set not exist.
Mode = no mode
Example 3
Determine the mode of the given data set that is {2, 3, 5, 7, 6, 9, 6, 11, 9, 12}.
Solution
Step 1: Arrange the data set in ascending order.
Data set = {2, 3, 5, 6, 6, 7, 9, 9, 11, 12}
Step 2: Note the most repeated number in the data set and write its repetition value.
Where “6 & 9” is the most repeated number and those are repeated 2-times in a data set.
Hence “6, 9
” is the mode of the data set.
